Located in southwest Baltimore County, Catonsville benefits from its proximity to a big city while retaining a unique small-town character. Catonsville was created in the late 18th century by Richard Caton, who had been commissioned by his father-in-law to develop the land around the new "Frederick Turnpike" (today's Frederick Road). The modern center of Catonsville retains its historic charm with large Victorian homes and a recently restored traditional “Main Street.”

Residents enjoy easy access to four interstates, the Baltimore-Washington International Airport, AMTRAK, MARC commuter service and MTA Bus Lines and Light Rail. The average commute is a mere 23 minutes. Catonsville residents are well educated: one in three has a college degree and one in ten has a graduate or professional degree. Catonsville boasts excellent private and public schools as well as two public colleges, Catonsville Community College and a campus of the University of Maryland.

Entertainment and recreational opportunities abound in the form of great shopping, Patapsco Valley State Park, two golf courses, several woodland areas and trails. A number of fascinating stores are located in Catonsville, including enough specialty music stores to earn it the nickname "Music City." Also popular are Banneker Historical Park and Museum, the Townsend House, and Pullen Museum. Catonsville also hosts exciting events such as the Fourth of July Parade and Fireworks and the Annual Arts and Crafts Festival.
